Hi There!
I'm the owner of Gloomy Garden Creations! I started this business in 2024 with the goal of creating a brand that values the personal touch and treasures the truly unique. Each creation I make is designed to be long lasting, creative, unique, and a little bit quirky.
I began making my own books through covid. I have always dabbled in any and all hands on hobbies, and have constantly been on the lookout for one that I could turn into a career. Many ideas have come and gone, but bookbinding, it stuck!
I got into leather work because it just felt right, I loved the look of beautiful leather tomes and old fashioned bound books and wanted to create my own aesthetic that matched it! From there the passion grew into the business it is today.
My goal for this business is to help people achieve their dream aesthetic and create products that last the test of time. Lets eradicate the need for single use items and buy things that we can keep forever. Items that create memories, and provoke feelings that can be remembered and passed down for generations.
My Story
Where to start...
Well, I am 29 years old (turning 30 this year). I have a young daughter whom I love more than anything.
I was a chef for 10 years and loved it. I still love cooking, but the hospitality life has its restrictions and difficulties, especially with a young family. So now I just cook for family and friends and the joy that brings.
As I mentioned above I love all things creative and hands on. I created this business out of pure desire. I wanted a job that I could do forever, from the comfort of my own home, that would work around family obligations, schooling and all that jazz. But I also knew if I was going to pull it off I had to truly love what I was doing. That's when I found bookbinding. I began watching YouTube videos and following people online that were creating their own journals, and suddenly I had fallen in love with it all. The craftsmanship, attention to detail, the ability to make creations that people could keep forever was so intriguing to me.
As an avid notebook collector I was always spending my money on new journals and notebooks, and to this day my collection is extensive. But, I grew tired of the minimal look that they all too often follow, as well as the over production of poorly made products, made for single use, that flood the market and feed the masses.
And thus the dream was born. To create high end, authentic, creative and a little bit alternative notebooks journals and whatever else I could come up with. To create products that spark joy and truly last the test of time.
I wanted to create a brand that not only was authentic and creative, but also stood for something. Sustainable and locally made from locally sourced suppliers. Thus the hunt for supplies began.
I began working with leather because it just felt right. The feel, texture and character that it lends to my projects is next level. Kangaroo leather specifically is what I have based my brand around. Wholly by accident did this become a part of my brand. I wanted to invest in supplies that helped build an Australian made feel, and when I started looking at leathers I stumbled upon a shop in Tasmania that sold kangaroo leather. It is strong and hardy and can withstand all you can throw at it, but is thin and pliable making it a dream to work with and craft with. On top of all that it perfectly fit my brand wants and needs. it became a perfect fit!
I use recycled paper in majority of my journals, sourcing this in bulk from a paper supplier in NSW. This made it easy for me to stay sustainable and local all at the same time. While I am still trying to find a good watercolour supplier for my more elevated books, for the time being I am putting my energy into creating my paper. I collect all of my paper offcuts and trimmings from the books that I make, and use them to create my own paper for new books. Nothing goes to waste!
Anything little thing I can do to stay local and sustainable is something I am constantly looking into.
Where I want it to go...
My next goal for the business is to branch out into other journals and books, like DnD books, daily trackers, witchcraft grimoires, etc. All the books I currently make are empty on the inside, ready to be filled with all your ideas, but id love to have a line of pre filled journals for specific uses, that people can use without the pressure of having to decide what they are going to write in it.
My focus has always been on custom orders, creating products that are designed just for you, capturing your personality in a book and creating a whimsical world of authentic products. But along side that, my dream for this business is to become even more sustainable, only using products that I believe in and trust, and creating a brand that people know and love.
